So my son (4) has owned his own betta for some time. A few months ago, he decided he needed a girl betta for a friend. OK. So they are in separate gallon jars, and eventually, I tire of changing all that water, so I put Mr. Betta in my main 55 gallon tank, until the holidays are over.
So today my son informs me that Ms. Betta was lonely, and he put her in with Mr. Betta, and they are playing a game. I'm thinking that somebody's getting murdered, so I rush in.....they are mating. Just like that. Within 2 minutes, no fuss, no bother. Of course, there's also no bubble nest, but I"ve never seen the like. They didn't do any chasing or anything, no biting...she was already barred up in the minute or so till I ran in, and he calmly and politely led her to a corner and...well.
Amazing. My other fish are pretty happy about it too...LOL.

lol Smile good thing they were ready to mate, but I would make sure that your son doesn't put mr and mrs betta together without permission Smile

Because they got a free lunch? Awesome story. Maybe your son will have one of those gifted touches where every fish he works with breeds...of course that might lead to some interesting conversations you have to have early. Very Happy

.I like your sons term for mating "playing a game". though I am not sure whether leaning the birds and the bees from fish woudl be good... Laughing. anyways nice story. that story is almost worthy of the "Tales" part of aquahobby.com. anyways sweat story

Yep, Cyradia, they got a few eggs out of the bargain.
Hours later, poor Mr. Betta is guarding his non-existant nest of non-eggs. They only dropped on one wrap, and not many at that. I'm pretty sure he didn't even pick any up, but he's guarding, and blowing, and doing his daddy-thing.
Maybe we should try this again after the holidays in an actual spawning tank. I feel for the little guy, and my son is convinced he'll have baby fish soon...(eek)

ahh. you should setup spawning tank just for him! so he can watch and learn about breeding bettas. if they start "playing a game" again can we get some pics b/c that would be cool. good luck with your bettas

cheers
