Hi all, I've just recently brought my new tank, as it says 55 G, I am wondering about the filtration for it... I am looking at buying a Fluval Canister 204 filter will this be sufficient? or should I look at the next size up?

I know the Fluval Canister 204 filter is only sufficient for 200L tanks, but I need a decent filtration. Due to the water I get here is brown... even the tap water is brown!

Cheers Ryan

I can buy the Fluval Canister 204 filter on sale for AU $134 or
Fluval Canister 304 filter for AU $192.55

Would it be better to get the 204 and put my old Fluval 2+ Internal Filter together?

Or would I be best to just buy the 304?
The 304 says... For aquariums up to 300 litres. Pumps 1000 lph.
The 204 says... For aquariums up to 200 litres. Pumps 680 lph.

One more option is to buy a Fluval Canister 104 and a Fluval 4+ Internal...
Fluval Canister 104... For aquariums up tp 100 litres. Pumps 480 lph
Fluval 4+ Internal... For aquariums up to 215 litres. Pumps 1000 lph
They both add up to AU $196.50

What should I do?

Cheers Ryan

I would say go with a Filstar XP2. They are 149.99 Canadian on Big Als. I would think that should be fairly close to your price. they are built a lot better than fluval.

anyway you go if you have a bit of extra money go with a bigger filter for your tank - at least if all fails you will know that its not a filtration problem. I setup my mom's 20 gal with a 55 gal filter just lower the current so the fish don't freek out.

if you want to over filter and you are finding current to be a problem for your fish, I would have the current hit some decorations such as rocks to break up the flow.

I wasn't meaning over filter in a bad way just filtering more than what would be the accepted norm for a tanks size Confused

some people have mixed feelings about what the best filter is so I will say what I know. I have a 204s on my 29 and 37 gallon tanks and a 404 on my 75 gallon and I never have a problem with water quality or clarity. I usually over filter my tanks a bit just to be safe. on a side note my 75 gallon is probably overstocked but with a 404 and tons of fast growing live plants I rarely need to do water changes. my nitrates are usually zero or close to it . I do about 20 percent once a month just to be safe but even without that my tank is always sparkling clear. there are about 5 swords,3 java ferns,a few small patches of java moss and about 50 feet of anachris(mostly floating). no co2 and about 1.5 wpg. I have virtually no alge thanks to a few ottos and a 8 inch gibby pleco. all of my plants grow slow but pretty steady. I don't know how relevant all this info is but it just goes to show how a good filter and lots of live plants can save you time and grief with your tank.

I would recommend a Fluval 4 Plus. Its an internal filter, but does miracles. Easier to clean, and the flow is much much better than a canister filter.
