I got a pair of Red Wagtail Platy today, I was going to get a pair of sunset platy but the LFS could not sell me them because they where still in quarantine.

My question is how do I tell if they are male or female? I do hope they give birth soon if one of them is a female.

Also any advice on keeping platy's?

If the females are pregnant, you will be able to see a gravid spot (looks like a black spot) on her body.

Males have gonopodiums (sp?) while females don't....for a lack of better description, it looks like a sharp pointy fin Confused

correct, look at the anal fins and tehre should be something like a little stick on it. That's the male's gonopodium.

Here's a website with a picture of the anal fins pointed out. The picture is of black mollys but the anal fins look the same as on platys.

While they are juveniles, platies all look much the same, except for the gonopodium, and even that can be hard to distinguish. As they get older, you'll find that the females get much bigger than the males, like two to three times the size. You should start to see the size difference in a couple of months, at most.
