OK my female swordtail had babies about a month ago, and I still can't tell if they are male or female yet. how long does this usually take to be able to tell. if you know please let me know because this one baby I want if it is a male my friend is going to take it but if it is a female I am going to keep it. and I would like to know that way if it is a male my friend can get her tank ready for him to go into. well please let me know.

When my swordtails had babies, I didn't notice their sex for about 4 months but I wasnt watching that closely it may be obvious a bit sooner. I noticed the gonopodium, the longer anal fin, about a month before the sword formed on his tail.

OK thank you for telling me that. someone on this site told me that you can tell in the first 4-5 weeks, and it has been that long and nothing happened.

well it depends on how old the swordtail is. mine is not that old and she had her first set of babies and she only had 18, they can have a lot,

my velvet swordtails are 1 month old and there is no possible way to tell the sex of them yet. You can see the gonopodium approximately at 3 to 4 months old. my Marigold Wag gave birth two days ago to a total of 32 babies but seven came out dead. Once they are like 2 years old, they can have even 60 or 70 fry at the time.
