For the last 2 years, while my brother's house wasn't ready, he and his Golden Retriever lived here in my home. In the meantime, I bought a female Golden for myself. The result was that I had to keep the pond covered with a grating, with disastrous results for it.

Now that the house of my brother was ready and he moved, taking both dogs, I am reactivating the pond. The apple snails, platys, serpae and black tetras had prospered, even with Bel ("my" dog) found extremely funny to pee in top of the pond - I do not have idea the ammonia levels had reached, but there is no more port acaras, corydoras and ottos.

Once I am having difficulties to find more Ports and I have some 30 young of Laetacara dorsigera and these fish live much southern than I (see the occurrence map below) I will try them in the pond.

The magenta dot at lower right shows my location. That dot in Amazon is probably a misidentification of another Laetacara

I've already released 16 young (6 last week and 10 today) and will release the rest of them in the next weeks. Now all that I can do is wish for them to adapt well in the pond and go through next winter.

To give you an idea of the pond:

Apple snails and vegetation

Dwarf papyrus (yet to grow)
