I am planning on building a wet/dry for my 150g.

I still haven't figured out how to balance the water coming in and water going out.

how?

and I am confused as to whether the sump is big enough. it's approx. 50g.

any help would be nice thank you.

First off, 50 gallons is definitely enough for a sump. So you've got that set. Now, to balance the water coming in and going out, you need an overflow box. This consists of: A box that sits in the tank, right at the surface. It has slots cut in the top of it to let water in. Then, attached to that is the box that hangs on the outside of the tank. It has a hole in it with a tube that sticks up and feeds water to the filter. These two boxes have a you-tube that sits in them. The you-tube is used as a siphon to take the water from the tank to the box that hangs on the back, down to the filter. There is a picture at this link.

After the water goes through all the filter media and everything, a pump pumps the water back into the aquarium. Everything stays in balance this way.

There is a diagram of a complete filter here

Hope this helps!
