hey
I was wondering if I could introduce swordtails into my pond and even some platy's, molly's, or guppies
its winter here in Australia QLD and the water can get down to 15 degrees C
but there is only a month left of winter until the temp rises
I've seen some swordtails in a pond recently but it was indoors and maybe heated
could I just add a pond light or will these conditions be OK? Smile
thanks Surprised

I think they might probably be OK, Fish can be a lot harder than they make out when left on their own. don't hold me to this though!

If you are going to put them in your pond after the weather warms up, what are you going to do next winter? The tropical fish cannot tolerate such low temperatures. Why not try goldfish and white cloud mountain minnows? You would be able to see the goldfish better in the pond as well.

Swordtails will do great over the summer, but you will be rolling a dice to leave them out during winter.

The good thing about outdoor living is that they grow faster, larger, more colorful, and then overrun you! In the case of golden wonder killies, after 3 months in a pond they were twice the size of some that were removed from the pond at one and a half months and then tank raised.

hey and thanks for the replys Smile
I have a tank setup for the winter months
I have now noticed the female swordtail eating a lot more and now has a fairly full belly
is their a chance she's pregnant and is there anything I can do to get the babies without them being eaten
thanks

Get a baby saver or something similar. It can be a semi stressful situation for the mom, but If you get a roomy enough and well filtrated enclosure she'll be fine. Maybe you could get a seperate tank and put ehr in it once that tank cycles. Then you could just raise the fry in that tank.

Byez! Very Happy
