When I started my 20gal. tank I started with a basic under gravel filter I chose a large polished gravel so waste would fall through with out getting caught. that part worked out, but since my water Is exactly the way I want it and I don't want to disturb my fish. whats a way to get the wase from under the filter with out dismanteling the tank. Is there another filter I can add underneath that will just suck up the waste. After I can figure this out I want to start my 55gal. If it makes any difference I'm focusing on Characins. I am open to any suggestions even changing the whole setup since I'm novice

I don't use a UGF but just an idea... insert a flexible hose into the tube and under the plates, then suction water and waste from under the plates.

Usual maintenance for a UGF is regular gravel vacuuming.
