I had just purchased a bulk of crayfish from nighttime fish market and after using most of them for my own consumption I plopped 3 of them into my local pond now I'm wondering if its OK for me to keep them there . I'm not sure if they are native crays or the alien signal crayfish BTW I live in London and I'm not sure if the law covers keeping them as pond creatures

There was a news feature from 17 November 2003 that cited a big problem with introducing North American Signal Crayfish into UK ecosystems. Being more aggressive than the native uk varity they out-compete for food etc.

Quote:
An Environmental agency spokesman added that it is illegal to keep or release to the wild any crayfish without a special licence.

These two sites have useful information

You might know Sea Life Adventure in Southend on sea? Well we started keeping a FW crayfish, however he escaped over the tank and into the drains. We had to pour pure bleach down the drains to kill the poor lil guy because theyre an invasive species.

thanks for your advice . I found this form online about the liscensing of keeping crays

My guess is that I'm keeping the signal crayfish but would this mean I'm exempt from the licence since I'm living in an area which no licence is required?
