For my French class we have to make our own magazine, un revue, and I am planning on doing one on Betta care, since it is something that interests me. Whenever I use a dictionary or a translator, something always ends up weird, and was wondering if there were anyone around here to help me with things.
My first question... how would you go about saying "Siamese Fighting Fish" or "Betta" on francais?
I'm actually really bad at the language. I started french in grade 5, did not learn a thing in grade 7 and 8, now I'm in Pre I.B. French (it's like advanced) and it's like being in grade 7 and 8 all over again

Betta is the same in English as in French. un betta male for male and une betta female for female. I have been living in the US for almost 4 years and am still fluent. _________________ "Feminae bene moratea historiam raro faciunt" |

Oddly enough, I think I have the answer or something that will point you in the right direction. I just got back from France a few weeks ago. While my wife and I were there we stayed in Paris for a few nights at an apartment that her friends keep for visiting business clients. In the apartment on a bookshelf was a book on keeping tropical fish, replete with photos and names.
En francais, the betta is called something along the lines of le poison Combatent, if memory serves me. I can't remember for the life of me if it is masculine or feminine. Funny, though, hey? Also my spelling might be off, it's worth double checking, but I know it was something like that. D'accord?
By the way, how do you get the c accent out of your keyboard?
And don't fret about French, it's quite difficult. I grew up not far from Canada and had classes in Canadien french from an early age. My first time in France I got slaughtered, the two are so dissimilar it's amazing. |

LOL even though it was a typo it was a pretty funny one. You called it the poison fighter. Most times the common name will be Combattant du Siam. Usually though you'll see Betta for the scientific name.
Here's a good article on betta care in french

here's a translation of Tim Miller's article on breeding bettas

Yeah, oops...Funny, though.
It was really odd to see a french aquarium book. It was even odder when I walked to Notre Dame. There is litterally two blocks on the Seine that are almost entirely pets shops. |
