The entertaining Clown Loach. (DEC 98)

Name: Botia macracantha
Size pHGHTemp
Origin: Indonesia, Sumatra, Borneo
30 cm 7.0 8 24oC

Until recently, this species was the cause of one of my greatest frustrations in the hobby. I have always been fascinated by the beauty and the fun behavior of the Clown Loach, but in the two times I had tried to keep them, they died within a week in the tank. After giving up for many years, I decided to try again, but this time did a lot of reading in books and on the net. Besides the obvious tips about keeping the water in top shape, etc., an important tip I found out was that these fish shouldn't be purchased too small (which was the case in my previous attempts). So I waited for the right moment and finally found some really nice, healthy, medium sized Loaches for a reasonable price, and bought three. Needless to say that I'm in love with them! In 6 months they've grown to about 9 cm and are currently the most attractive fish in this tank. The comparison of their behavior to dogs is quite appropriate, you can almost hear them bark :-)
