also found a portable r/o on ebay for under a hundred dollars.

A lot of stuff on the market is a waste of money but the Kent product would make your bottled water safe to use.

no more chemicals. Want to stick to water changes and fodd. Keep what goes in tank to a minimum. Also get my filter media for my various filters. Buy unassembled and in bulk. Have 4 filters running at this time.

Filter media lasts for years. You can buy generic wadding or fish safe foam & cut it to fit.

I've got foam, but what about the corser fibre floss for BB to grow on. Can I just use foam for both pieces?

Foam is OK for both. Beneficial bacteria doesn't care what it grows on as long as it is non toxic and has a huge surface area.

I got a large piece of foam at the aquarium store for filters. It was pretty cheap. So I'll just use that. Makes sense. Thanks.
