well I attempted a 5 gallon nano aquarium a few years ago. With great success but lost my job and then the coralline algae took over my tank and as I tried scraping it off the acrylic scratched. along with all the bristle worms took over . Well I guess my questions are I setup a new 29 gallon tank marine land filter emperor 280 hang on with extra carbon cartridge. Don

1. Magnetic glass cleaners will take care of the film on the glass.

2. The algae can sometimes be removed from the old rock using a stiff aquarium brush and running water, but I wouldn't bother.

3. If you are building a reef system then yes, fresh live rock is a good idea.

I'm not a big fan of 4 inch sand beds inside display tanks due to the potential for nutrient buildup, nitrates and stagnation; I know some hobbyists have luck with them but I think they are better reserved for remote refugiums. But of course we know there are different avenues to success and I do wish all you the best.
