I'm getting a little confused with how flow rate translates to a filters max aquarium size.

A while ago I was looking into a canister filter for my 10Gal and when I asked about the Fluval 105 I was told it would create way to much current in such a small tank.

I'm looking at the ratings now and I don't understand: The 105 is quoted as having "only" 85Gph flow. My little AquaClear is quote as having 100Gph flow. I'm lead to believe that canisters are more effective and thus (at comparable flow) can filter a larger aquarium, but why would we think the Fluval would create more current in the tank?

Then for fun I looked into Enheim and got more confused: their model 2211 is quoted as having an even lower flow, just 60Gph, but is listed for aquariums up to 40Gal!

I'm all befuddled...

It is all about the time water is in contact with media and media surface area.

Some filters base the flow rate on empty boxes & no lift/head height so the figures may not be relevant.
