We have very hard well water. My husband has decided that we need a water softener. My fish are doing great in our hard water and I'm seriously concerned what will happen when the water changes that drastically.

I'm assuming I'll need to slowly acclimate them by doing small water changes over time to combine the new soft water with the hard water. But, that means figuring out how much and how to store the hard water. And, how much time do I need to allow between each water change?

I do have a pump in the barn that will not be run through the softener. I can bring up buckets of water from it but it's REALLY cold so I'd have to let it sit for a day or so to let it get to room temp; which is still colder than the 78 degrees that I keep my tank water. Would that work?

Any thoughts on this?

Don't use the softened water but get a plastic dustbin & a spare heater and use this to prepare water from the barn.

Forever? Or, just to slowly acclimate them to the soft water?
