I am a total novice to breeding fish, we had set up a seperate breeding tank to try and breed some silver tip tetras, but had to turn it off and put the tetras back into our main tank, so the filter and heater got turned off about three weeks ago, I didn't get round to emptying the tank of water, this morning we looked into the tank and spotted a couple of fry and as we was sat there staring in amazement we was spotting more and more, last count so far is seven fry swimming about.
My question is how on earth have they hatched or even survived with no heat or filtration and oxygen in the tank, I can see its possible as there are at least seven fry swimming around the tank, but surely this defies all logic, could someone please give me an answer. thank you.

If the tank is in a habitable room it should have held a temperature that these fry could stand.
No filter - seven tiny fry in a reasonable volume of water can live OK.

Turn the heater back on but not the filter unless is is a very low current sponge type.

Do a large 40 -50% water change on your main tank.
Do daily 10% water changes on the fry tank. You can, if the main tank's water is good, use some water from this tank as part of the replacement water to minimise shock.

When I first kept fish filters were rare and not understood.

Thanks for all the advice guys and as soon as I noticed the fry, I turned my heater back on and my low current filter. The fry are doing really well, Justin I keep both my tanks at 27 degrees to minimize stress if I need to move them to either tank.
