Ah yes always the way...

So there was notable damage to the reefs? I remember my dive instructor in Thailand saying the reefs had been really badly damaged from the boxing day tsunami.

Well, there was a lot of damage to certain areas of the reef, but there is still plenty of reef left to see. The main problem has been the lack of business due to lack of tourism--no one wants to come to Queensland anymore after the floods and the cyclone, despite the fact that everything is fine now. Tourism dollars are hugely important to much of Queensland, the GBR dive industry especially. And it's hard to convince people to come here after the recent natural disasters have been so over-sensationalized in the worldwide media. The government has been giving monetary assistance to farmers, but not to dive shop owners, which is a huge oversight because if the dive industry goes under, it's going to be really hard to recover.

Bottom line: everyone come to Queensland!!!! It's still beautiful here!!

Oh okay, yeah probably the case. At least hopefully the break in tourists will give the reef time to recover...

The government might be increasing their tourism marketing, surely they would see the problem and doing something about it?
