So, my partner and I decided to get a 3ft fish tank! He has a 4G tank that houses a betta, and I have a 20G tank which houses 1 angel, and 9 neon tetras.

We bought the tank second hand, and it was pretty grotty, and the back glass has some scratches on it, which are very annoying.

Cleaning the tank (no, that's not hot water, it was just a good thing to transport water in)

Boiling the slate-

Clean and ready to go!

Setting up the barriers-

Sand and gravel in place-

Making the rock caves!

Planting-

Filled up with the filter on!

The plan at the moment is to have:

8 leopard danios (the boyfriend's request)
5-8 peppered cories
1 bristlenose
8-10 harlequin rasboras

The plants so far are:
thin val
ambulia
milfoil
dwarf HC

Why don't you move the angel over?

The angel lives at my house, and this tank is at my partner's house.

When I move in here in a few months The angel will probably come with me. At the moment I don't want to stress him out too much.

Looking good!

Agreed with moving the angel over. But looks like you have a nice choice of fish! Harlequins are great fish, especially once you start getting a decent size school of them, really entertaining to watch.

Nice job so far!

The look of the Vals swaying in the water is neat.

Thanks!!

How many Harlequins would you recommend? I do want them to be quite happy.

Great looking tank. You could get away with upwards of 14 to 16 harlequins in that tank. And I also agree that the angel would do well in this tank.

Do you think the angel may get a bit aggressive? I think that's what I'm most worried about.

It will be less likely to be aggressive in this tank that in a 20g with neons.

Great question and it depends on who you ask and also on the fish itself. I have not experienced the aggression with Angels that some very knowledgeable and experienced folks on this site have. IMO a three foot tank and a single angel should be fine. Harlequins are too fast for an angel to constantly harass and too big bodied to be thought of as food. What you might see is a change in the behavior of the harlequins once the angel is introduced. A group of more than ten will form a loose shoal - meaning they will follow in small groups, come together as a whole, split up, follow an individual again, etc. Very enjoyable to watch. This might very well change with a larger fish in the tank. They will stay close together more, spend less time out in the open areas and be generally less active throughout the entire tank. This doesn't occur in a larger tank but it may in yours.
