How many Harlequins would you recommend? I do want them to be quite happy.

You could get away with upwards of 14 to 16 harlequins in that tank

10 is definitely a good starting number, and like Topper said, around 16 would be good! A larger group of them will make them feel more secure, and look a lot better, but obviously you want to be careful to not overstock your tank.

Do you think the angel may get a bit aggressive? I think that's what I'm most worried about.

I don't think you will have a problem, angels aren't particularly aggresive, and again like Topper said, the harlequins are too big to be considered food. I have kept an angel and a group of 14 harlequins in a slightly smaller tank - the dimensions were about 75x35x45 cm from memory, was about 110 litres (or a 30 gal), with no problems at all. The angel didn't bother them, so hopefully yours will be fine too!

Thanks for all your responses. The tank has fully cycled now thanks to the help of filter media from my 20 gal, and we have introduced 6 leopard danios. We will be testing the water daily to ensure it remains stable.

I think the next plan will be some cories, not sure when, but 1-2 weeks if everything goes well.

Here is an update of the tank.

It currently houses:
1 bristlenose
3 peppered corydoras
1 angelfish
6 serpae tetras
6 leopard danios
2 balloon mollies

Everything seems to be going really well. We lost 2 corydoras to fungus this week, so the tank is being treated, and no other fish are displaying symptoms.
Aside from that, it's great!

Wow, looking good!

That angel looks like a nice one, and I love serpaes, I miss mine!

Has it got a background on it? Hard to tell in the photo...I think a plain black background would look great, especially once the plants grow out a bit.

Keep the photos coming Very Happy

Thankyou Smile

The angel is just gorgeous. I think it's a boy, and he follows my boyfriend around.

There is a pale blue card on the back of the tank. Any suggestions for something else?

Fish with personality are the best Very Happy

Oh okay. Well obviously it's just down to personal preference, I guess experiment what backgrounds (I only go for solid colours) look the best with your fish, plants, substrate etc (a black background might contrast too much with your lovely white substrate).

This might give you some ideas.

Hello! Just giving you all an update!

Stocking is as follows:

1 angelfish
1 bristlenose
5 leopard danios
5 serpae tetras
4 peppered cories

We had 1 male and 3 female balloon mollies in there as well, but discovered they were the cause of the fin nipping! They have been set up in a 10g tank and seem much happier. No fry as of yet.

We got some new plants too! so far we have:
ambulia
milfoil
dwarf hairgrass
blue stricta (I think)
dwarf green rush
thin val

so this is the tank from the front:

This is from the left side. I think that plant is blue stricta? can anyone ID?

This is the right side of the tank. The serpae tetras have so much fun chasing each other around the tank.

This is the left side of the tank. We have a DIY co2 unit in just behind the 'forest'

This is what the mean mollies did to the angel!

And this is Monster with his shrimp pellet!

Great looking tank. Especially the grass in the current - Very "amano-like".

Love the tank... very natural looking.

I do want to mention that Serpae's are notorious for fin nipping... especially towards Angels. Having a large school (15 plus) will often help the issue as they tend to mess with each other instead of the other fish in the tank with long fins.

Just a thought... hopefully you won't find it an issue with your tank.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. could you show me an example?

I thought it was the serpae's that were doing the nipping, until I watched the mollies do it on several occasions.

We also seem to have 3 molly fry Smile
