My 56 gal tall has been running for a year with community fish, but I have found them to be boring in color. I'd like to give my current stock to my LFS and completely restock this tank with African cichlids. I really like the Mbuna tank pics that I've seen because of all the of the bright coloration. Could you all please give me some suggestions for what fully stocked would look for my aquarium?

*Note: I realize a longer aquarium is better than a tall for africans. But this is what I have. Also I plan to re-scape with rocks before changing the stock.

Thanks!

Sorry, not in that size & shape of tank.

What is wrong with a pair of koi angels and 20 assorted platies?

I'd like to get away from a bunch of small fish. I'd like 5-10 larger, more colorful fish. Any suggestions for anything else?

No interest in goldfish at all. Guess I'll just have to figure out the africans on my own as I'm sure I've seen lots of beautiful mbuna 56 gals while deciding what to restock with.

There is one possible mbuna option which is a single species tank if you choose one with sexual dimorphism so you can have two colours and maybe an albino without mixing species.

Many mbuna tanks become a bloodbath within months as fish mature.

The only reason I asked about Africans is because I use tap and I have hard water and high pH (like 7.8-8 as I recall)...not good for SA cichlids, I think.

I was planning on buying the fish from liveaquaria.com because while reading through these forums a lot of people said they sell well-bred fish. So whatever is available from liveaquaria, I'm definitely willing to consider. If you don't mind, could you give me a list of the african species with sexual dimorphism to research?

Are the different color of peacocks actually the same species? Would this work?

Thanks!

Liveaquaria? Psh, sorry to say this, but I would go from aquabid. Liveaquaria is just the same as a fish store but being shipped, I would rather have it shipped to me from somebodies garage who care for their fish more than a normal LFS.
