The city switched us from the "city water" to some of the well water that is more in our neighborhood because they are replacing some pipes. The pH of the new water is only like .1 higher than the other water, but the new water is very highly chlorinated. When I do the laundry or take a shower, its like walking into a public swim pool, the smell is so strong. In the old water, it was a faint smell, if you could smell it at all.

My question is... do I need to worry about a higher level of chlorination in my water? Can I keep using the recommended dosage of dechlorinator, or should I double it? I'm using API stress coat right now, and I don't really have the room or the buckets right now to let the water sit out overnight.

This is one of the rare occasions when a chlorine test kit would come in handy.

In short, yes, you do need to worry. Most dechlorinators only give you the dose to knock out a typical dose of chlorine, I think it's around 1-3 ppm typically in tapwater.

I'm not sure exactly what the composition of Stress Coat is or how much chlorine it's meant to knock out, but double or triple dosing sounds like a good idea to me.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a chlorine test.Laughing

I'll start with double doses, and if I see anybody gasping or other abnormal behaviors, I'll up it to triple.

Thanks unissuh!

API brand also makes 'tap water conditioner' which is supposedly stronger (more concentrated) than Stress Coat so this might help you better.
