Hmm...Just wondering, but did you remove the sand? Most breeder tanks don't have sand unless the fish need them. I would just put some spawning mops, java moss and duckweed in there and let them do their thing.

I'm going to do a layer of peat, then a bunch of java moss, and duck weed for some dim light.

What kind of peat? Just normal peat from the store or the compact balls that you can get from foster and smith? I would think normal peat would compact really hard.
