Does anyone's fish do this???? My new upside-down catfish does it all the time when I get close to the tank.

Why do they play dead? Is it a defense mechanism or something?

My female betta does it all the time. There's a decoration covered with java moss so she wedges herself in there on her side or upside down or something. Sometimes I have to reach in and poke her and she gets mad at me for waking her up. Laughing

Yeah it hangs out upside-down (of course, lol) in my artificial floating plants but stops moving when I get near. The first time it scared me but when I turned around I heard a sudden splash. I guess it was getting air or something.
