I can't figure out how to get my picture to display in my post, but if you click on my link, hopefully you'll go to my picture... (tell me if you don't, and I'll try again!)

When I first got this fish, several years ago, it looked like an SAE. (I suppose it could've been an CAE; I didn't know the difference then.) It was a juvie. During the next several months, it slowly turned beige/cream from the tail forward. In the process it has lost all its markings. It lives happily in my 20 gal long tank and gets along fine with its tetra tank-mates.

An 'albino' SAE?

Something else entirely?

What is my fish?!!

Thanks in advance!

Chinese algae eater.

Can you post photos of your other algae eaters too?

Really! Shocked But it has no markings! Do they regularly turn beige like that??

I purchased 2 SAEs (I hope!) last Saturday for my 46 gallon from a very reputable LFS. I'll try to get pics and post the links.

Wow. Really?! Gulp.

What do I do? I doubt the LFS will take it. It is years old....

It's a golden form but some are paler than others.
If you've had it years it may be a mellow and stunted one but I have seen these 10" long.

Photos of your others would help as often species are mixed by exporters.

Oh dear. Shocked I do NOT want this fish to grow to 10 inches! Yick!

Here is one that I bought last Saturday. It posed on a rock for me.

Here is the 2nd one.

What is the verdict?!?!

Those are SAE.

If you look they don't have a sucker mouth like the gold one.

Whew; at least my new ones seem good.

But what do I do about the CAE?? (panic!) I don't want it sucking the fish slime off my other nice fish! Argh! Neither do I want it taking over my tank!

Heres a better representation on the gallery of a golden CAE - it looks quite like yours Very Happy

If you havent had a problem yet with your CAE.. see if it continues to do well. Keep it well fed. If you notice red marks on your fishes bodies.. it is time to return him to the LFS or rehome in a larger, less populated tank with lots of hiding spots.
