I am a bit wary on the basis that if it appears too good to be true...

What is the consensus on this - will it do what it suggests?

Never used this brand, I hope this one works considering the cost. In the end they are using tricky bacterial manipulation to temporarily deal with the symptoms as opposed to the cause. These gizmos usually work by using anaerobic denitrification. Keep in mind, this is not a "set it and forget it" deal. Requires a fair amount of maintenance. Ask yourself; if you don't have the time to do a partial water change on a schedule, do you really have time to adjust the flow rate every 2-3 days and add the nutrients as required? Think before you purchase.... in theory these types of products will indeed reduce nitrates. But can they reduce enough to allow you to ignore water changes? Consider dealing with source as opposed to the symptoms. Figure out what is causing those excess nitrates. You might find this thread interesting as well:

This is similar to that BS Tetra EasyBalance that supposively reduces water changes to every six months. I went to my grandparents' apartment one day, and found out that they had been using this. It's an odd coincidence that during the time they had been using this "miracle product" their tank was in the worst shape it's ever been in! I told them to pitch that stuff. Lol, last time I was there, I told them they need to start doing a better job at their monthly water changes, and they said "So it needs to be changed every month, not every six months?" There's really no substitute for frequent water changes, in my opinion.

FB sums it up for me - and I agree 100% that you can't beat a solid routine of regular water changes.

This won't be on the christmas list (although a new RO filter membrane will be!)

Keep in mind, the "nutrient" they are telling you to inject every 4-7 days into their filter is simply vodka (ethanol) or sugar water solution. Be sure to read the link I provided earlier to the other thread on this.

I did recall (and re-read) that thread when Andrew postd up talking about dosing glucose and vodka.

Not planning to purchase or to follow on with adding either to my tank - don't really feel I know enough about it and am concentrating on my water changes and routine maintainance to manage phosphates and nitrates.

I have noticed an increase in tank algae but suspect this is as much to do with the tank being relocated and is now closer to a window. Temperature is not a problem as I invested in a chiller last summer but the extra light must be having an effect.
