Okay, so I'm contemplating setting up a new reef only aquarium. I consider myself a rather experienced aquarist in the freshwater field. But the idea of watching my little aqua garden grow is fascinating to me!

However I have read many an article online, and have read some that agree, and others that disagree with each other. So I now turn to my trusted aqua-hobby-iests here on the forum. I need your help to learn anything I can about begining a REEF ONLY aquarium!

Anything that helped you when you started out (online articles, own personal stories, warnings, tips, ect.), also I have read some things about the live rock being the only REAL filtration system I need... :? (this is the face I make everytime I read that).

thanks, I appreciate the help! :D

LOL, yes a garden... a fussy garden, where the residents all wage war on each other. Smile

Well the live rock certainly helps with biological filtration but it's not always the only type required for long term success. For example, chemical filtration removes toxins produced by soft corals, and a serious protein skimmer is going to be essential for organic export to keep your water top notch if you decide to try the more delicate small polyp stony corals (SPS).

Please see my Myth 15 regarding the extra demands of reef systems here:

Unfortunately, it is beyond the scope of this forum to teach you ALL you need to know about reef systems, you'll need to do some research and then come back with specific questions.

If your serious about reef tanks, I suggest you do yourself a favor, and pick a copy of one or all of the following:
