Today, while processing a submitted comment for the Rainbow Cichlid where the visitor also submitted a YouTube video, it suddenly occurred to me that YouTube and Google Video hosting are by now well established and reliable enough that I could begin including actual videos of fish species in the Gallery section, as an alternative to the traditional photos. The idea is now being beta-tested on the first page of the Rainbow Cichlid:

http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Herotilapia_multispinosa.php

What do you think? Should I send out an official "call for videos"? Cool

If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video has got to be worth a million. Especially if it demonstrates "normal" behavior. I really like the idea but I would appreciate a still image in addition for quick reference as well as for when youtube just doesn't want to load or for when my internet's running slow.. even if the image is smaller than what's regularly posted.

kudos Marcos,
Kurt

definetely needs a still picture as well, stills generally have better quality than videos when you need details. but this does look like an interesting idea.

Hmmm...good point. So the first page could have a photo and a video side by side if they fit, otherwise I could maintain a photo on the first page and include a video when a second page is created (7+ comments). Interesting...

..not to mention people who browse while at work.. their office might block youtube. I like side by side.. I don't think I've ever browsed to a second page of comments.

Then you haven't seen my piranha photos. Sad

I think it's a great idea, Marcos.

I think its brilliant idea. I'm visiting YouTube all the time for fish videos Rolling Eyes
But I agree, I wouldn't drop still pictures - as DF Bobo said, sometimes it is hard to get the details from video alone..

Hi,
I think this is a great idea.
I have found that taking photos of fish to be very hard. But being able to give a video of the fish, and their behavior would be by far a great idea.

mac

EDIT. What Jusu and BF Bobo have already stated is of very good importance. Having still pictures is handy to show the full detail of the fish.

You can have use to any of my fish videos, if you wish to implement this plan. I usually host on Photobucket...which has been around for years upon years and IME is very stable as well. It could give potential keepers a bit of refrence to fish behavior, potential size, etc A picture is great for ID but its really hard to grasp size by a pictures stance.

I like the idea, it's pretty cool but I also think we should keep the stills as well.

I was just thinking, if you go through the youtube route, would it be possible to set up a youtube subscription type thing (the word for it escapes me right now Razz ) under the name of Aquahobby or Age of Aquariums or something site related and have all the fish videos posted on there as well? Seems like pretty good advertising to me. *shrug*
