My fish stores are actually good. I just tried a new fish store and I was looking for a new light and some more fish and I got a 20 min. talk about what lights work well, what lights go with what, what plants go with what lights, everything I've learned on this site Laughing. I was going to get a pair of Bolivian Rams and he was very knowledgable on them. Also the manager has a series of little videos and the shops website that explains a lot to new fish keepers about the hobby. Out of at 100 tanks, I saw 0 dead fish Razz. The only reason I stopped going to my other LFS was because it was a bit more on the pricey side than my new one. I think I'm pretty lucky for this.

On the flip side, I have seen a horrible WalMart with lots of dead fish in each tank, 10-15 Oscars crammed into a small tank and filthy filters. This was no where near me and I didn't get any fish.

Hi,
It is great to see that there are local fish shops out there who care about their fish, and customers.
Shame that there is both good shops with bad. Crying or Very sad

I have had no proper information given to me from my local lfs, in fact, my mother and I are often the ones giving advice!! I was told that my cichlids needed $100 worth of corals in their tank to be able to live, but later found out that the guy was making up stuff. the kind I wanted did not need a high pH like he told me. I would have killed them if I listened to him!! they never inform you about compatibility, and didn't even tell me about how big snakeskin gourami get!! he didn't even know that blue gourami are an semi-aggressive species!! I hate the lfs here, and only buy from them, not ask them any questions anymore.

This thread is a bit old, but might as well add my experience.

I have 2 LFS I frequent, with completely different styles.
One LFS (closer one) is dark and dingy, poor fish but good prices with some pretty scarey clientel, if you get the right person you'll never have a problem but since the employee group there is so tight, you'll often get a bird area person in the fish part talking to a buddy and if someone asks him for help he just makes something up. Kinda sad and fun to watch at the same time. Laughing They've got a pretty good system though, they'll sell you a fish that might be too large for your current tank but warn you that you'll need to upgrade or bring them back in once they get too big. This way, they sell a fish at juvie size and in 3-4 months without having to worry about feeding and tank requirements, they get an adult fish back that they can turn around and sell for 4 times the price. Rolling Eyes

The other LFS, farther away but truely great. Has an upstairs room filled with display tanks, the 2 owners are specialists in their own area (Kevin has FW, Sean has SW) and if one of the employees doesn't know the answer, they'll find someone who does and not try to BS it, if none of the employees know they don't find it demeaning to them to ask other customers for their experience, or they go through the book shelf looking for the answer. Very dedicated folk.

we have 5 "LPS" in our area here as well three are of the chain store variaty, and 2 are Mom & Pop types. And 1 Walmart that sells fish as well.

I have also been involved with fish for many years as far back as High school ( Yeah so far back dirt was just a fad then ). and had a few Pet stores I would frequent. But also had the Ames, and Stewarts etc etc ( small versions of Walmart )

Now first & formost I do NOT consider the Walmarts, Ames, Stewarts, KMarts even loosly as Pet stores or lump them in as LFS etc. That is simply a small department for them and many don't even have that. That said however, where they do have them the vast majority are very well maintained, but they are department stores so do not expect the clerk to be a fish expert.

if you think the avg clerk in a Walmart, or an Ames, Or a Stewarts is an expert and ask them expert type question, Then Please Just Step away from the Fish Tank and go get your mommy to help you.
Common sense goes on both sides of the fence.

I have yet to walk into ANY Walmart that carries Fish and find conditions that many seem to enjoy reporting. Not saying it does not happen, I'm sure it does on some occasions and for any number of reasons, but it is rare. I just happen to know more than a few things about Walmart and how they do things, and as such I do know that poor maintenance is rare and isolated and often more often than not the inturpretation of the individual reporting it ( sorry originally said reporter, but did not wish to insult anyone by useing that term).

Now on the issue of LFS etc yes like many I have heard bad advice handed out at any number of LFS, However most of that can be mitagated by simply asking this as the first Question: Are You the The Fish Specialist here Most Clerks will simply answer no, so then you know to not ask them any relivent questions involving fish or upkeep.

Most Knowledgeable Clerks are easy to spot. I have one Store I went into and simply asked a group of clerks standing around if they carried Eco Complete, One cleark said " Ahh A Planted Tank Keeper eh" then proceded to show me where the Substrate was located, that simple statement let me know who to talk to. Turns out he is very knowledgeable, he knew Buenos Aries Tetras would not be good in my tank because it would be planted,
Knew to warn me of the Pl*CO2 size when growen, even had one of a larger size to show. etc etc etc

The Other LFS is run by a nice enough guy, has a few kids helping him, one of which is one of those types that will try and fake his way through any thing. I asked for a pair of cardinal Tetras, and watched him try and catch them, He was very aggressive at it. So I simply informed him of the proper method, watched him then easily aquire the desired fish, said see how much easier that is, and far less stressful on the fish.
Now this particular LPS the owner is not all that fish knowledgeable, he has and sells dyed fish ( yeah I know this brings out the activists) but while his store is not on par cleanleness wise as chain strores his selection is excellant, and he will try his best to aquire any fish you request, he will even isolate them when they come in, now that is service. And when he does not know something, he will tell you so right up front.

Chain stores, Like PetSmart, PetCo etc
First and most importantly... DO NOT ASK THE CASHIER, they don't do fish, or birds etc etc etc, You wouldnt walk into a grocery store and ask the cashier there what the best cut of a Tuna Fillet is. So if you ask a cashiers advice, then that is your own stupid fault you deserve to get the answer you got, hey maybe you will get lucky and your fish will live, but chalk that up to the fish's hardeness not the cashiers knowledge level.

As pointed out earlier, ASK FOR THE SPECIALIST. Know at least in part what you yourself are doing, If you are unsure of an answer ask it again in this forum for clarification, who knows it might just be the way you ask a question that gets you a wrong answer.
