I have visited Helsinki in the past week and now that I am back in Oulu I am able to upload my pictures already. I was mainly in Helsinki because of Finnish Metal Expo, but as I am not only a metalhead but also a fish freak I of course also had to do some fish sight seeing. Wink There are a lot of Sea Life public aquariums mainly in central Europe and the UK with two exceptions: one in California and one in Helsinki. Smile

But let's come to the pictures:
Definitely too hard to take a picture of, but THIS is, what I call a school of cardinal tetras:

The one tank that seemed to inhabit all the fish that grew too big for home aquariums. It featured some Arowanas, freshwater stingrays, Pangasius....

Piranha and Pacu tank. The Pacus reached maybe 70 to 80 cm:

approximately 1 meter long tiger shovelnose:

one very nice brackish tank:

and now over to the salty guys....
Those vertical brown lines in the middle are fish. the always moved in the current as if they were seaweed:

The Coral reef... not as nice as the ones I know in Austria, but still OK I guess:

Found Nemo. Wink

Some people DO have ugly decorations in their aquariums! Laughing

I love jellyfish! They are so fragile and still alive. True beauties! Smile

Giant shrimp tank:

Something which we call in german a "running tank": a circular aquarium in which very lively fish can swim rounds and rounds without ever stopping. Although this one had a diameter of approximately 5 meters and as a visitor you stood just in the middle of it. Smile Stocking: a few hundred Baltic herrings.

Hope you enjoy the pictures! Not all of them are in best quality... sorry for that. Embarassed

That shrimp tank is interesting! I always wonder why everyone who keeps marine aquariums tends to recreate a reef environment, when the oceans are such diverse places. Its a shame marine plants aren't more readily available, although I guess most of them grow far too large. I think if I ever go down the marine route, its something I'll consider.

I love tanks like the brackish one, where you can see onto the land as well as underwater. At the 'Underwater World' on the Sunshine Coast of Australia (I used to live fairly close, so I went there often) they had an enormous tank spanning two floors. Up the top you could view the fish from above, as you might see them from land, as well as the freshwater crocodiles basking. Downstairs you got an underwater view of enormous barramundi, a sawfish, etc.

Jellyfish are awesome. I wonder if people will ever figure out a way to keep them long-term in captivity. There are a few who have started raising freshwater jellyfish, which are known to exist on all continents except Antarctica. They're pretty small, so I guess they'll never appeal to mainstream aquarists.

Public aquariums can be inspiring places. Very Happy
