| It's possible, but it's not really a "sump" by the strict definition of the word. The one caveat is that the main tank must be able to handle the excess overflow from the sump if the pump is shut off. |

is a sump just considered a filter box? so I can use an oversized filter box then? |

A sump in the traditional definition is something that collects water below its source. Hence, a traditional sump goes under a tank and it fed via an overflow from the main tank. It's purpose is to increase water volume, store equipment out of the main tank, facilitate water changes, and potentially act as a refugium.
Generally sumps aren't used as filters per-say, unless you have some live rock or macroalgae, or perhaps a carbon reactor.
What exactly are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to increase water volume? Add filtration? Etc...? |

I thought the sump is used to filter debris or waste from the main. I still have a lot to learn about marine setup
what is really the purpose of a sump? what are the things that are put inside its tank? |

As I said, the two big reasons are to increase total system water volume and to house equipment. Increasing system water volume leads to a more stable system.
They can also be used to house a refugium, and make water changes easier.

Typically skimmers, heaters, thermometers, and reactors (calcium, phosban, etc). Pretty much anything besides powerheads. |
