...and who thought something so tasty would be so beautiful. I thought I would show these two off since people always ask what they are.

On the left the teardrop Maxima and on the right my Derasa.

there are giant clams like that that can be kept in saltwater tanks. they are from the genus tridacna (is it genus?) from my understanding, they get their food from photosynthetic zooxanthelae, like corals. anyways, nice clams.

They are nice...and live in the 125 gallon mixed reef. The sad thing is pictures never capture their irridescence.

They are filter feeders and are known to consume nitrates but in small quantities. They will NOT bring your nitrates down from 40ppm to 10ppm. Up until the time they are over 3 or so inches they must be fed or they will die and once they are that size they require strong lighting such as Halides.

Good looking clams, Jack. Too bad the photographs don't pick up the irridecance. How old and big are they?

You are correct Tridacna is a genus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tridacna

They come in many colors:

The Maxima is about 8" and I have had him for a year, the Derasa is about 5" and I have had him almost a month. The Derasa has a beautiful blue band on the edge of the mantle, it just doesn't show up in photographs.
