I would say that the right schedule is the one that keeps your levels healthy (which is different for everyone.) Yours sound okay at your current schedule, though you could get away with doing it weekly for lower nitrates. You could do less than 30% at a time that way.

Do a 30% water change and vac every 2 weeks. Changing the water too frequently comprimises the mini ecosystem in your tank.

I disagree with heinkok.

When nitrates are high (30 is high IMO), mostly the tank is over stocked. The only way to bring it down is more water changes. If he is having problems with high nitrates doing weekly WCs, making it two weeks will spike up the nitrates more. Gold fish are mess eaters and produce lots of waste. Without more water changes, the water will get worse.

I would go for more water changes in this case unless you can have tons of plants in the tank or reduce the bio-load. You did not say how big was the tank and how many fish you have in there. My guess is it is over stocked.

More water changes will only hurt when your tank is cycling. After that, weekly 30% water changes will not have negctive impact at all.

Yeah you have a point there. More info regarding plants and how many fish would be helpful.
