Check and see if there are any local fish forums in your area. Most of them have a buy/sell section where you can pick up cheap used equipment. See if you can get them to throw in the gravel as well... gravel is often more expensive than the tank itself, even new.

Where should I go to find those osprey? I'm a beginning aquarist, and judging by my overstocked tank, I could use all the help I can get lol. Do you have any good links to a forum like you are talking about?

Just do a google search for fish/aqurium clubs or forums in your area, it should turn up something.

I ended up buying an aquarium from a friend today. It's a 4'x2'x1' 55 gallon with two 350 filters, some fish books and an air system for 30 dollars. I know the tank is in good working condition, because it's set up right now

wow, you got out very cheap, I paid more than that for my heater.

Has the tank been cycled, and does anything live in it right now?

It did have cichlids and they grew to large so he took them out.
