Does anyone have any idea how I can lower my pH without using chemicals that will kill my live plants.

I have an EcoWater System for my house which makes my house water very soft but my pH is at 8.6 PPM. A year and a half ago I started a 29 gal freshwater tank and the pH was 7.0. I don't know if the city is changing the chemicals they dump into the freshwater or not (they do so often) but I was hoping someone would have a great idea.

I'm starting a 55 gal "freshwater" fish tank...but if I can't bring the pH down it might be a "marine" fish tank!

Thanks everyone.

Tyy Peat Moss get yourself a filter bag then get some aquarium peat moss not the kind you get at your plant nursary but that should help the pH get down!

You need to find out what happens to your tap water after 24+ hours. Use a plastic cup to hole water, test it right out of tap, then water for 24 hours to test it again for pH.

Let us know the result so we can help you.

define soft... there is GH which is a measure of calcium and magnesium in the water, and then there is carbonate hardness. Carbonate hardness is the hardness that is more commonly at fault when we have a high pH and the water resists movement in pH. If the water treatment system you have is essentially a water softener, then you may still have very high carbonate levels in the water.

Measure your KH and tell us the reading.

there are many fish that love high pH... At 8.6ppm you could have a lovely assortment of Malawi or Tanganyikan cichlids. I would hold off on jumping to conclusions as to what you can or cannot have.

Hope this helps
