I bought mine several years ago at petco, they usually have them in my area.

I think it's because they look rather bland in most store tanks. I know the ones I got the other day looked more of pale yellow than a vibrant gold in the store. Once I brought them home and they adjusted to the tank they changed to that nice gold color with a slight hint of green.

Most fish stores that I've seen like to go for flashy fish that will catch the eye of most consumers. Gold barbs just don't really do that in the store. I only got them on the advice of another fish-keeper. I'm glad I took the advise now. Smile
