I took my non-fish-savvy father with me to my LFS today, and as I was choosing a betta and some vals, he wandered around and read the labels on all the tanks. As we were driving home, he said, "Did you know they have some kind of lobster-ish shrimp-thing that eats ich off fish?" Immediately skeptical, I quizzed him, and all he knows is that the tank was empty, but there was some sort of invert drawn on it that read "eats ich off the sides of fish."

Anyone ever heard anything like this?

I've never heard of that! (but it brought to mind that scene in Nemo with the little shrimp: "He is clean!") I hope someone here knows 'cause I'm interested.

Cleaner shrimp probably - saltwater critters not freshwater.

Look up 'redline' or 'skunk' cleaner shrimp. Perhaps 'coral banded' shrimp too.

Like unissuh said, there are shrimp that eat ich off of fish.. but saltwater. As far as I know there's nothing like that for freshwater.

Funny, I thought Ich was freshwater only. How would a marine shrimp get to it?

Ich is one of the major problems with salt water tanks.

Is it a different variety of ich? A different species of parasite? I just learned yesterday how salt affects the ich's cellular structure and now I'm confused. Razz
