Hi all,

I was planning on cutting down on the cycle time for my 46 gallon bowfront. I have a smaller 15 gallon mature tank that has plenty of fish in there and am currently running my 46 gallon tank's filter on the smaller tank. Having transferred the bio filter of the smaller filter into the bigger one with a bio-wheel.

I am planning on running it for a week so some bacteria can start forming on the bio-wheel and then switch over the filter to the larger tank. I would also be putting some of the old tanks's water in there along with it. What I wanted to know is would this help reduce the cycle time? I am going to initially plant the tank with lots of plants and let it run for a week with minimal fish....1 or 2 platys and then add new fish on a weekly basis from my old tank.

Any thoughts anyone?

That sounds like it will work just fine, though you could leave it in for longer than a week to be safe. Especially if you add fish slowly and keep tabs on the water quality, it will definitely be faster without being dangerous to your fish.
