I have had a 30 gallon tank sitting in my room for some time and it has been collecting some dust in and on the tank. Do I just clean it with regular tap water and a soap free cloth? I want to make sure I'm not doing anything dumb.

Yes, plain water and a lint free cloth would be perfect. If it seems to need a little scrubbing, you can use aquarium salt on your cloth as an abrasive.

Yeah I would agree, around the top just use plain water. I clean the glass sides with some windex that I spray on a cloth away from the water and wipe down it real quick.

I had a similar situation with a 55 gallon I got from a friend. There was lots of dirt and dust all over. I used an entire roll of paper towels and tap water. Had to clean it like 4 or 5 times before it sparkled.

Good news is it just finished cycling yesterday....to the LFS today... Very Happy

just make sure no detergents get inside the tank, a little windex on the outside is okay. use a cloth that hasn't been in contact with cleaning chemicals. just wipe it down with some water and a paper towel.
