After what seemed like an endless 4 weeks, my tank is finally cycled! I made the mistake initially of adding fish too soon (5 zebra danios and 2 cherry barbs) and agonized the next 4 weeks over whether or not my fish would make it. If I were to do it again, I would do a fishless cycle! Anyway, the zebras and cherrys made it and now my tank is completely cycled.

10 gallon
temp - 79 F
pH - 7.6
ammonia - 0!
nitrite - 0!
nitrate - 10ppm!

I took the zebra danios back to my lfs and got one more cherry barb. I now have in the tank:

1 male crowntail betta (a transfer from a tiny 1 gallon tank)
3 cherry barbs (1 male, 2 female)
2 ghost shrimp
1+ "mystery" snail
Plants:
a couple of bunches of hornwort
2 water wisteria

My betta is so happy! He's been all over the tank and has staked out his corner. He is very happy with the cherry barbs and I've even caught him playing chase with them. So far, none of them have done any fin nipping! The betta even seems to enjoy swimming in the plants. I'm so glad that I made the decision to move him.
I was thinking of waiting a few more weeks and adding a dwarf gourami to the tank. What do you think?

Happy fishkeeping!

Gouramis and bettas are related, so I wouldn't add one. It would be similar to adding another betta to the tank.

Here is the whole tank:

And here is "Mr. B", my betta(no, there aren't two of him, that's his reflection in the mirror behind the tank):

Unfortunately, I don't have the best camera in the world so the betta's colors don't come out very well. He's a beautiful red color with some speckling of purple on his fins and back. Also, the cherry barbs are just too fast for my camera. But you get the idea!

So what else do you all recommend I add? I was thinking one more (2 at the most) in a couple of weeks. Are there any type of gourami that the betta won't be likely to fight with? He seems to be a very peaceful boy for a fish of his reputation.... Laughing
