I have a 24x12x18 20 gallon aquarium and within 5 days about an inch and a half evaporated. Is that normal? I do have a hood on it.

When it comes to evaporation, it's difficult to establish "normal". There are so many variables to be considered. Ambient temps, tank temp, filters, etc.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about 1.5" in a week though. You may, just for good measures, give your tank a once over to make sure it doesn't have a small leak at one of the seams. I doubt it though...

if you have a trickle filter or really high lights then it would evaporate faster but with that amount, I wouldn't be worries since I lose the same amount weekly in my 20 gallon. just top it off as needed.

In a centrally heated (Very dry air) house with no lid on, you could easily lose a few to several inches a week.

Do you have cover glass, between the surface of the water and the hood?

Hi,

You will always notice Evaporation more so in smaller tanks,but just in case, check for leaks and let us know what sort of lighting you have.

Glass lids make all the difference as far as evaporation is concerned.

By the time I do a weekly water change, not 1 liter out of my 33-gallon has been lost.
