Just wondering if anyone have experience to share in building an external plant filter to keep nitrate under control?

It is a 125g tank with lots of cichlids. Nitrate is high 80 -100 ppm with frequent water changes. I am thinking of putting a couple of peace lillies on top of the tank with left over shultz profile subrate and have water pump to the flower pots by a small powerhead.

1. Will profile be good as a hydroponic media?
2. How many plants do I need to be effective?
3. Being a darker corner, any other plants suggestions other than peace lilly?

thanks for helping.

You need lots of plants to make it work. One pot will not do the trick. Find some fast growing plants like the one that will go up the wall and does not need much light.

One thing you need to be careful. Since fish are very senstive to air pollutions, you want to make sure no pestside or air frehner are used close to the plants. You could end up killing all your fish with a bug spray. Another thing is you want to watch is the water flow. You don't want any blockage that could spill the water everywhere and drain your fish tank.

I would consider two options: Either reduce the bio load or do more water changes. These are the two sure ways to get the nitrates down.
125 g discus tank 13 discus, 5 Sterbai cory, 3 clown loaches, 1 Albino BN pH 6.3 50% WC x2/wk
2 g nano tank 3 Danio, pH 7.6 80% WC/ 2 days
