Before I found this website, I had only known ocellaris clownfish as common clownfish or sometimes false percula.
So where does this name come from and what does it mean?

I'm not an expert on fish names, here's my best shot...
Like many fish, they possess a round marking on the tail, in some fish this takes the form of a fake eye on the tail to deceive predators... this is known as an "ocellus." This Clownfish has more of a big circle of color inside a dark ring on its tail, not so much an "eye," but it is a round marking for sure. The name dates back to 1830 when the French zoologist by the name of Georges Cuvier dubbed the fish Amphiprion ocellaris.

I believe the genus name "Amphiprion" is from the Greek (Amphi=double, and prion=saw) has to do with the 2 rows of saw like teeth but not sure about it. On the reefs in the Pacific we have seen large 5 inch specimens of Cinnamons with really big triangluar teeth and they know how to use them on a diver who gets too close.
