This warning appears in fine print on the Tetra freeze dried bloodworm container:

I think the dried product is potentially even worse because of fine dust particles that get in the air and can be inhaled. With the frozen or live product, you may be able to use them if you avoid touching them by wearing gloves or using utensils. However, the larvae are in the tank water and then sensitive people can have problems when they do maintenance on their tank.
Many people can use bloodworms without any adverse effect but if you experience ANY symptoms associated with bloodworm use, you should not use them at all.

| some places in malaysia has `fresh` bloodworms...still alive...just a day taken from a drainage (usually)..stink! |

Wow! Live and learn. I have known for years of the warning on bloodworm containers, and many old books mention the possibility of an allergic reaction, but I have never heard of anyone actually having one until now.
Lunar, I'm sorry you are going through this. I hope the Benedryl works.
Don't hesitate to seek more medical attention, if necessary!
The containers I have (or have had) of bloodworms, be it freeze-dried or frozen, are labeled red mosquito larvae. Could it be there's not much difference between red midges and mosquitoes? Could the contents be mixed insect larvae? I've wondered about this before.

Midges and mosquitoes are related and that's probably why your package is labeled 'red mosquito larvae.' Midges are non-biting mosquito-like insects.

I kinda know how you feel. I got done handling blood worms then rubbed my eyes. my eyes turned a sick red and itched. holy crap they itched bad. nothing stopped it and it was like 11 at night. I actually was punhing my legs to get my mind off the itch.

A hint for those who rub their eyes. 
Stick your head, more specifically your eyes, under a faucet with cool water for 10-15 minutes. It's the same procedure used in labs at eye-wash stations. It will help. Have someone hold your head there if need be.

Wow, freaking weird. My mom just got some puffers and she feeds them bloodworms. Last weekend she busted out in hives and a rash and we couldn't figure out why. I'll let her read this... hmm but then I might have to feed them

Thanks loads, I'm definately wearing gloves next time.
In fact why not use tools.
I have a stock of bloodworms because there were a lot of them in some old filter pads of my pond filter. Didn't know this could happen.
