I am using Kent Garlic Extreme drops to combat an outbreak of ich in my marine tank. I noticed that the nitrate readings had dropped from 10ppm to 5ppm over the course of three days and wondered if the garlic (or preservatives in the bottle) were having an impact on the readings. I did a cross check against a reading from one of my freshwater tanks and sure enough the tank sample tested 20ppm and the sample of water mixed with garlic came out as zero.
I am using a Red Sea nitrate test kit, has anyone heard of this before?

I am not a chemist but it is feasable that the garlic is binding to the nitrates making the test inaccurate. The nitrates are still there just masked.

mm maybe the nitrates have just dropped. acording to my chem teacher(doing year 11 chem atm) there isn't really much that will bind with Nitrate to form a solid participate. the NO3- will just stay in solution, its a fairly unreactive ion.

FB, I won't be drinking the garlic (just a little on my weekend burger maybe  )
I know the garlic won't kill the problem, I was working on the theory that it will help build up resitance to the cysts attaching. I am also building up the natural immune system by feeding with the New Era flake food eight week system).
Andy, thanks for running this past an academic, I tested again today and the nitrate was about 2.5ppm so I am getting some readings. I will keep this thread posted with the results after I stop adding the garlic.

Uhh, no. I wasn't suggesting you would drink the garlic... "drinking the cool-aid" is a term used to describe those who swallow a non-truth believing it will bring them a solution, only to result in tragedy; as in the Jim Jones scenario. Sadly, I have seen a lot of quality marine life die from cryptocaryon parasitic infestations while hobbyists conducted "experiments" based on theories with garlic. I have researched/do understand the theory, but it has proven to have a weak track record in the industry... I did post another opinion on the subject. Anyway, good luck with it!
