My sis in law has a gold fish tank, and some one advised to add aquarium salt to keep them in good condition, I've never heard of this before with goldfish and I'm sure its not the right thing to do, can someone just put us on the right track,

To me that is a myth and I belive that too many dissolved solids in water for a freshwater fish will interfere with their osmoregulation.
It is deffinatly not neccessary but in very small amounts will do no harm.
Salt can be used to cure treat certain freshwater fish ailments.

I agree with Jose, but if you have any live plants in the tank they will suffer, due to addition of salt.

I've been told peas work well, but I'm not sure why.

Peas are very good food for all fish, just thaw a frozen one under hot water, dice it up and feed the fish. My tetras, catfish and cichlids all love them. I feed them ounce a week with peas.
