today I went to the petstore and bought a piece of live rock (1.5 pounds) on the way home I notieced a small starfish stuck on the end. it was only about 1/2 and inch wide. it's a whiter color. I figured the thing was dead but about 4 hours ago when I put the rock in the tank it started to move. within 5 minutes in was halfaway across the rock! I am so excited. but the thing is... I know absolutely nothing about it or what to do. do I feed it?

also on the piece of rock there was some kind of anenome that is brownish in color and only about a 1/3 of an inch across and about 2/3'' tall. we asked if it was a "bad" thing and she said if it was it would die within 2 days because of what they put in there tanks. I really didn't understand this, but I thought that if it was something "good" I might as well take it. I don't have a camera that will be able to create a good enough pic of it.

also the other day I bought another piece of live rock and on it there was a small mushroom like thing. it was curled up at the petstore but opened up in my tank. its a greenish color and about 1'' across. from what the petstore called theres it is some peppermint mushroom or something. I can't remember exactly.

thanks all

yup... thats it, it looks exactly like the striped mushroom.

for lighting I use 2, 120 volt/ 15 watt bulbs. they are on for the whole day until I go to bed.

these things move so fast! I am suprised. I say "these" because I have now found 3 small starfish. 2 of them only have 3 "legs", but there are new ones comming in. I'll see if they grow and get larger befor I take a picture, right now they are too small to be seen in the camera.

the specific gravity of my tank is 1.022(about) I think... thats alright for them right?

thanks

well if you use a hydrometer, I wouldn't trust it. get a refractometer. turns out my hydrometer was reading 3 ppt under the refractometer...(hydro said 1.024...refract said 1.027 which is way too high). 1.022 is fine Smile

as for the starfish and nems, get a pic. some can be bad Smile

lighting...I have no idea how large your tank is(how large is it?)...but just move the shroom to the top just to be safe Smile

I've got a ten gallon, and yes yes I know I shouldn't do such a small saltwater tank but I thought I 'd give it a try.

the starfish and nems are a little small for my camera to focus onto.
the largest starfish looks like a chocolate chip starfish.

how do I move the shroom?
