If you change all your pre-filters more often, 6 to 7 months, you should get 5 to 8 years out of the membrane. Chlorine, and how hard your water is will determine the lifespan of the R/O membrane... that's why the big range... no one could calculate how much chlorine it will be exposed to, and how hard your water is from day to day...

The pre-filters remove things that could harm the R/O membrane, and can last a long time if they get infrequent use.
I have a family of 5 and we replace our pre-filters every 6 months.
My mother-in-law who lives all on her own, has me replace the filters once per year.

Don't neglect rinsing the R/O membrane as well... you do this when you switch the back pressure valve off and allow water to run freely through the unit.
