I'm sure having one higher than the other is going to flood the room.
The water will flow down the pipe and will keep trying to fill the lower tank to the height of the top one. Or I think that is correct, been ages since I've messed about with water in this way!
One idea I have is that you could somehow seal off the lower tank completely on top, therefore the water could not "escape" from that end of the system. It would solve the trouble of the pressure overflowing the lower tank.
But it would have its own problems, suchas filtration etc. Just and idea, not sure if it would work though! |

That would work, but I would not bother with that. I have a betta in the tank that is not particularly smart, and it would end up suffocating. _________________

If you have a chop saw you could shorten the legs of the higher tank stand.
If its a neat project your after here's an idea that's been floating around in my head.
It involves the cup/vacuum effect. Get a piece of the clear pipe top it with a water/air tight sphere or square. Submerge it into the tank filling it with water to create a vacuum. Keeping the open end submerged raise it to mid-level and secure it to the side of the tank. You wind up with a really cool looking thing that fish can swim up into and be above the tank.
I'm sure there's a flaw or 2 in the idea. But like I said its an idea that's been in my head without the time or $ to create it. If you can make it work I want to see lots of pictures! |

Here is one picture at least. Did this about 5 years ago.

It does work.
The biggest problem is that water is HEAVY so you need good support. You can't see it in that picture, but I have a square section of wood with a hole in the middle cut out to support the weight of the jar. Also, make sure whatever container is on top can deal with outside pressure or it could implode on you. |
