Can any other Australians, tell me where I can find pure ammonia?

I've tried: one pharmacy (can't remember the name)
Coles
Woolworths
Franklins

And can only find cloudy ammonia.

I don't live in Australia, but I do know that you should ask around at the LFS, and check out home supply stores(Home Depot, OSH). But, under no circumstances use any type of household ammonia-based substances. this will contaminate the water with uneeded pollution. If you can't find Ammonia, just buy a couple of small fish you can give away later and use that Ammonia. You can also let food disintegrate into the tank without fish, this will create ammonia. Cool

sorry, forgot to mention that I've tried 5 or 6 LPS. All have done a double take when I asked them, and similar replies to the effect of "no you don't understand, fish produce ammonia and the last thing you want to do is add it, you need to get rid of it, etc, etc" I honestly don't feel competant enough to argue, so I just say "OK". There is one guy in one store who seems to know a lot but I haven't seen him on duty for a long time.

The chemist that I asked had an even stranger response, and it caused such a stir amongst the staff there that I had to explain myseldf fully, and I'm too shy to ask another chemist.

I think your idea of a hardware type place is worth a go.

I completely concur about the wrong sort of ammonia. Cloudy ammonia from Woolworths (for other Australians) is the wrong stuff. As previously mentioned I ruined my initial cycle on my 100L using that stuff and had to scrub everything down. Ended up doing a fishy come plant type cycle which worked well.

Hi, I'm in Sydney, Australia. Can't say I've ever used Ammonia to Cycle my tanks. Always went with a Silent Cycle where you have Fish + tons of Plants.

You could check out Bunnings warehouse. They have all sorts of stuff for Gardnening and House hold chemicals.

thanks for the suggestions.

I've been trying to get to Bunnings for a while. WilbyZ, I used the Silent Cycle method (kindof) for my other tank. It worked well. You don't hear much about it here (except sometimes in the plants forum).

I don't need it now anyway, but if I ever get to Bunnings I will look for it, and if they have it I'll post it here.
