Does anyone have any experience with these fish? I have seen some in a book and think they look quite cool, although look kinda drab. It says in the passage that they are easy to breed, and is this true??

never kept them, but here in Japan they seem to be quite popular and readily available in fish shops. Their glowing eyes look really cool amidst plants...

Thanks for the reply, Marcos. I have never seen them here in Scotland, but in the book they were in the killifish section.

What's wrong with that? They *are* killifish (Cyprinodontiformes)

From what I've heard they are easy to breed, but the fry are a bit tricky in that they are small.

Another similar group of fish would be those of the genus Oryzias(the ricefishes). I'm not sure if they are killifish or not technically but they do appeal to the same crowd and have the same eyes.

I think 2la keeps these guys...and has some nice photos of them.

I've some experience with these (actually the only killifish species I've kept so far). There were two at the fish shop, they looked so forlorn amongst the larger fish that I couldn't help myself buying them.

Unfortunately the female died shortly after I introduced it. Its possible that it ate too many freeze-dried bloodworms, a food I've ceased feeding. I didn't know at the time that freeze-dried bloodworms can expand when wet. Otherwise it may have been ill/injured before I got it.

A couple months on, the male is still doing extremely well. Genders are quite easy to identify if they hold still. They're schooling fish for sure, and I'll get a few more next time I see them. Eats flake, live foods. They sleep at the surface against the glass or under floating plants. Mostly stick to the mid-water during the day. The very edge of his tail is also blue now (like the eyes), but only noticeable from certain angles against the right background. The fins and body have gained a slight yellow tint.

Is there any flake food, etc. that these fish will eat? Sorry to hijack the thread, but I saw these in the LFS, and they are absolutely STUNNING.

Keeno, we used to have some and they'd eat the Tetra brand flake foods we used... Unfortunately they've all died now due to my bf's poor tank management.
